Tonto Assistive Technologies came about from a stint in the Aged Care sector whilst working in an IT role for an Aged Care provider. Travelling to a number of the Aged Care centres within the group provided me with the opportunity to meet and become acquainted with a large number of the residents. It was a great experience having met with so many elderly people of different ages, cultures and backgrounds.
A stand out meeting for me was a chap by the name of David who was just a tad over 60 years of age and as sharp as a tac but here he was in an aged care centre? David suffers from muscular dystrophy and his condition had reached a stage where he could no longer live independently and so an aged care facility was decided to be the most suitable place of accommodation for him. David's muscular dystrophy pretty much confines him to a wheelchair. He has very limited upper body mobility but can manage a joystick to control his wheelchair. I noticed David had very limited use of a mobile phone to make and receive calls.
David's condition got me thinking about the restrictions that people with similar physical disabilities must face when it comes to being included in our now prevalent Internet connected world. I thought surely there must be technologies for people like David that allow inclusion and connection in this space.
My research led me to the tecla-e and its creator Komodo Openlab. The tecla-e is an assistive technology device for those with limited upper-body mobility resulting from spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, ALS, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, brain injuries, or stroke. Komodo OpenLab is responsible for its creation.
After liaising with Komodo Openlab and experiencing firsthand what the tecla-e can offer to people with limited mobility Tonto Assistive Technologies was established as a proud reseller of this great product.
